The Teton Crest Trail - Wyoming - Part 8 - Day 2 - Death Canyon Sights

Clear here for prior post.

This camp did not have that secure feeling the Granite Canyon site had; to me anyway.  I kept looking up at the cliffs above us for apes...you know the scene from the original Planet of the Apes...when they enter the forbidden zone?  This place had that vibe to the west toward the cliffs.  Were we being watched?  Just kidding of course.  There were whistle pigs yelling at us - Marmots - but nothing else.

We set up our tents and pumped some water from the nearby stream and decided to explore a bit before we ate dinner.  We had a hearty Cassoulet made from great northern beans, chicken and summer sausage - delicious as always.

Best seat in the house.
The best part of this trip was the short mileage planned for each day, gave us a little more time in camp in the morning and evening.  So we took in the sights from the the rim of the canyon and watched the sunset light up the Tetons.  To our surprise a full moon also came up over the ridge of the canyon.  It was a feast for the eyes and it seemed like a contrived, perfect moment.  You need to take these days and relish them.  We all sat in awe of the spectacle before us.

Our campsite is behind this building sized boulder.
He needs no introduction - the man with the orange Crocs.
Had to have a picture of me somewhere!!
The Tetons in the distance were being painted by the setting sun.
The Earth's shadow can be seen down the canyon.

Moon over Death Canyon - sounds like a Hardy Boys title.

  1. That sunset was incredible. I also think you need to work in something about how this was the first time Sugar "bonked" in the middle of the night, right? That was a beautiful campsite, that's for sure. We had a tough day ahead of us.....stay tuned...
